Waycross Police Department
The Waycross Police Department's Field Operations unit includes fifty-two sworn officers who are responsible to the citizens of Waycross twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. The department had ineffective property and evidence management, with labels / bar codes fading and unreadable, manual location and movement tracking and no computerized chain-of-custody. The department received a grant to implement an improved evidence/property management and chain-of-custody system.
SmartTaxx database management software was customized to the department's requirements, including the tagging and tracking of property, evidence, narcotics, currency and weapons, and is integrated to auto-import new records added to the department's case management system. Storage locations are bar coded and items are tracked to storage locations using a portable bar code scanner. Inventories are periodically performed also using the portable bar code scanner. When items are issued, the recipient signs an electronic signature pad to authenticate transfers, which save to a printable chain-of-custody log. Property return letters automatically queue and print for sending to property owners when due for return.
